Brushy Creek

Those looking to get away from city life, whether for an hour or a day, can find what they are looking for at Brushy Creek State Recreation Area in southern Webster County.

Brushy Creek is located just 15 miles southeast of Fort Dodge, and offers outdoor enthusiasts more than 6,000 acres of park space, including 35 miles of trails and 690 acres of water.

A beautiful man-made lake is available for swimming, fishing and boating. In 1998, the lake was stocked with walleye, large-mouth bass, muskie, redear sunfish, crappie, channel catfish and bluegill. Four boat ramps are in place.

The park’s extensive 35-mile trail system is available for horseback riding, snowmobiling, cross country skiing and mountain biking. The park also offers one of the most modern camp facilities in the Midwest.

For the equestrian users, the northern equestriancampground has a modern shower and restroomfacility, 125 campsites, 50 of which are electrical; ahorse wash area; ample shade; a hitch rail at every site; and an arena. Water hydrants with portable water are also available, as well as picnic tables and grills.

The southern equestrian campground is still under construction, but will house 105 sites when completed. Day-use staging areas near the equestrian campgrounds are available with additional staging areas being developed in the southern areas of the park.

Hunting is also popular at Brushy Creek. Every year hunters pursue a variety of games species ranging from pheasants, quail, rabbits and squirrels to white-tailed deer and wild turkeys.

Brushy Creek is home to two shooting ranges.

Brushy Creek State Recreation Area has been named an Iowa Destination Park and is considered one ofIowa’s best recreational assets.
