Fort Dodge Public Library
For hundreds of Fort Dodge citizens who labored and advocated for years for a new public library, their vision of a beautiful new library finally happened. Following a successful community fundraising campaign that raised more than $2 million and a triumphant bondreferendum that received overwhelming public support,the dream of a new Fort Dodge Public Library became a reality.
On a cold, snowy morning in January 2001, more than 1,700 people braved Iowa winter conditions to be apart of the much-anticipated grand opening of the new FortDodge Public Library. What they found was beyond anything they had imagined. Their dream of a new and beautiful, handicap accessible, state-accredited facility with state-of-the-art technology, and increased programming had come true.
Located on the historic City Square, the Fort Dodge PublicLibrary with 32,300 square feet of warm, comfortable space,features an automated library catalog, reference electronic databases, children’s workstations and computer workstations with Internet access. The library also features group study rooms and a community meeting room with connectivity to the Iowa Communications Network offering video teleconferencing capability. The main collection area includes a magazine reading area with a charming fireplace,comfortable armchairs and a browsing area for new material.
The Children’s Department is located on the first floor across from the adult services department. With the newStory Time Room, Vincent House Puppet Theater, Oleson Park Bandshell display and the meeting room, the children’s department has become a very popular place, offering expanded programming to serve more children and families. The Sticks Gallery furnishings add a special ambiance to the area.
Also available to library patrons is the Once upon aThyme coffee shop located in the main lobby of the library and the Webster County Genealogical Society and theWebster County Historical Society located on main floor.Numerous individuals and organizations are dedicated to the ongoing support of the library. The W.H. JohnstonFoundation provides charitable financial support for the library to enhance its existing programs and collections.The Friends of the Fort Dodge Public Library provide support through book and magazine sales and their annual membership drive.
The Friends Book Shoppe, located just inside the library, sells books, magazines and puzzles,donated by the public with the proceeds going to support the library. Now recognized as the “living room” of Fort Dodge, the new Fort Dodge Public Library serves as a symbol of FortDodge’s progress, its community spirit and its commitment to life-long learning
