The agency was restructured in October of 1997 from a community action agency to a single-purpose agency to administer the federally-funded Head Start program in Hamilton, Humboldt, Webster and Wright Counties. In 1999, Early Head Start was added to our programs. Currently, we employ 54-60 staff persons and contract with other agencies for additional services. We are governed by a Board of Directors representing all four counties and a Policy Council of elected parents and community members. Each program follows national Head Start Performance Standards. Head Start is a pre-school program for eligible 3-5 year-olds. We operate fourteen classrooms within our four-county area and are funded to serve 194 children. Most of our classrooms provide a four-hour pre-school day either four or five days a week, September through the middle of May. Early Head Start is funded to serve 50 pregnant women, infants and/or toddlers in a home-based program with weekly hour and a half visits year-round. Both programs focus on child competency and cover all areas of development; social, emotional, physical and cognitive. Collaboration with other support agencies in our communities helps us provide individualized services to meet each child's needs. Parent involvement is strongly encouraged and activities are designed to encourage positive parent-child interactions. Parents are linked with community resources that help them reach their individual goals on the path to self-sufficiency.
